Here’s a little of this and some of that from the week that was in my world:

  • Make sure to check out “Picture This” here on my site. I just posted a video that sugar-mama gave me and it’s pretty damn awesome. Hard to describe other than a montage of ’80s stars filmed today lip-syncing to the same song. Just go watch it.
  • My first full week of “work” went fairly well. There was a lot of sitting around and waiting, but also a ton of picking up on new stuff. I also sat through about six or seven meetings between Wednesday and Friday, and a full day of orientation on Monday. That’ll take a little getting used to as meetings were a last resort in my previous life, but now seem that they are destined to be a continuity from here on out.
  • I’ll gladly deal with all the meetings since I get to wear jeans to work whenever I want. I’m at six out of seven days so far. And the odds on that percentage going down are not favorable.
  • We have a cafeteria “on campus”, or if you will, in the building next to mine. I actually have to walk through the TBS and TNT studios building to get to my office, and the middle building has the cafeteria. They have barbecue pork, a sandwich bar, Chick-fil-A and Diet Mt. Dew every day. I’ll bring my lunch still, but when I don’t, I’d say that’s a nice little perk.
  • There’s also a Turner Athletic Club in the basement of one of the buildings, which makes it easy to start working out again. The building is the original home of CNN, and upstairs, right above where I was running on the treadmill the other day, was where the WWE used to tape matches when CNN first got started. Supposedly, when CNN went on the air the first weekend, there was a match upstairs and viewers of the first telecasts could hear it in the background.
  • My commute is about 15 minutes more than it was in Lincoln, as I’m going about 35 minutes each way. It’s just long enough for the car to get warmed up, but not so long that it sucks. Some people in my office are going an hour and 15 minutes each way. Not so much.
  • The temperature has been in the mid-30s each morning this week when I left for work but I haven’t been induced into wearing a coat yet. I’m only in the car and then walking less than three minutes to get into a building, where I spend the whole day. Why wear a coat? Although, everyone who wore gloves, scarves, coats (including full parkas) looks a little weird at me. Even when they have that on and it’s 52 when we leave to come home at night.
  • Each cubicle is pre-wired for cable TVs, which we’re supposed to get ordered next week. My boss didn’t want us to not have one since we’ll be posting content on college sports and we will “need to keep up on what’s going on.” Well, hell yes.
  • The first labeled cubicle I saw when they were taking me down to my area was one for Craig Sager. I didn’t look in it, but if he doesn’t have a multi-colored table top like one of his suits, I’ll be highly disappointed.
  • I’m sitting here watching the SEC and Pac-10 title games and thinking how much I want TCU to get into the title game against Oregon. Cam Newton is the best player in the country, but I just don’t want Auburn in the game. I think UO / TCU would be a better game.
  • Thinking about the Big 12 Championship Game tonight. First, I need a beer. Second, one of the biggest things I miss about doing media relations is the road trips. Third, I hope they win and it’s a great game. OU/NU for the title is too good.

Well, that’s about it. Pretty boring is my life now that I’m back in the real world. It was much more fun sitting around all day “freelancing” and reading things and finding new stuff to write about. I’ll try to start doing the same again when I get more settled in and see how things will flow around the office.

In the meantime, if you see a good article that you’d like to get my opinion on, feel free to send it to me at jerry.trickie (at) gmail.com. I will gladly comment on everything sent my way. The stranger the better.
